GESI Giga Batteries reaches another milestone
September 2026. This year, the problem of so-called curtailments in northern Germany has become even more acute: time and again, wind turbines have had to be throttled back or even shut down because new wind farms were being connected to the grid, whilst there was still a lack of storage facilities and power lines to the south.
This makes large-scale battery storage all the more important, and the company GESI Giga Batteries – which was incubated by Schoeller Ventures – is driving forward a particularly large-scale project: in Alfstedt, north of Bremen, GESI is planning to build a 740-megawatt storage facility – and has just reached an important milestone with the signing of the connection and installation contract.
The facility will help ensure that wind turbines need to be curtailed less often and that the potential of renewable energy is better utilised. You can find out what’s next for Alfstedt and when construction work is expected to begin in the GESI Newsroom.
