Large-scale battery storage planned on an area of up to 16 hectares | GESI office opened on site
Grohnde, February 2026. Preparations are in full swing: In the immediate vicinity of the former Grohnde nuclear power plant in Lower Saxony, one of the largest electricity storage facilities in Germany is set to be built by 2028.
“Up to €700 million is to be invested by the company Green Energy Storage Initiative SE (GESI) in Emmerthal to install battery storage systems on an area of up to 16 hectares,” as correctly reported by the Deister- und Weserzeitung a few weeks ago. For context: this corresponds to roughly 22 football fields.
Our board member Jens Michael Wegmann, who comes from the region, presented the project in January at the energy trade fair in Emmerthal. In addition, a GESI office has now been opened on site.
If everything continues according to plan, the extensive construction planning and approval procedures could be completed within the current year. Among other things, the permitting process in accordance with the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG) and the detailed planning of the battery site are currently underway.
